The Light was originally built in Lake Huron in 1884 on a "crib", an artificial-island landfill, more than 2000 feet from the Cheboygan shore. After toppling into the water, the 25 ft steel tower was pulled ashore and restored. It is now located at the Doyle Recreation Area at the mouth of the Cheboygan River entrance to Lake Huron.

It was designed by Orlando Metcalfe Poe, who designed some of the most beautiful lighthouses in America on the Great Lakes. Some of Poe's lighthouses are reminiscent of elaborately decorated "chess pieces" with all the frills! He also designed the Wind Point Light in Racine, Wisconsin, about an hour away in addition to other Great Lake Lighthouses
