Tall Ship Europa at Chicago Harbor Lighthouse

Tall Ship Europa at Chicago Harbor Lighthouse

SKU: 35366

Since 1994 the barque EUROPA has roamed the seas of the world and built up the reputation of a ship that really sails. The EUROPA was built in 1911 under the name of “Senator Brockes” at the Stulcken shipyard in Hamburg, at the request of the city of Hamburg. The ship was put into service as Elbe 3 lightship on the river Elbe, and later worked as a stand-by vessel. In 1986 the ship was brought to the Netherlands. Over a period of 8 years, she was completely rebuilt and rigged as a three-masted bark.
A professional crew of 14 and a complement of 48 voyage crewmembers of all ages and nationalities sail her. Tall Ships enthusiasts, some with no sailing experience, take the wheel, hoist the yards, navigate, etc. In a light breeze 30 sails billow from EUROPA, taking her towards the horizon.
At 184 ft overall length Europa sails from her home port of Scheveningen,  The Netherlands
She participated in the 2010 Great Lakes United TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE in the ports of: Toronto-Cleveland-Bay City-Duluth-Green Bay.

In 2005, the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse, deemed excess by the Coast Guard, was offered at no cost to eligible entities, including federal, state, and local agencies, non-profit corporations, and educational organizations under the provisions of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. Though it took a few years, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar initiated the transfer of the lighthouse to the City of Chicago on February 24, 2009. The city had designated the lighthouse a Chicago Landmark in 2003.
