Tall Ship Lynx rounds Chicago Harbor Lighthouse
SKU: 35410
Launched in Rockport Maine on July 29, 2001, Privateer Lynx is a Baltimore Clipper Schooner with a sparred length of 122 ft. She is operated by the Lynx Educational Foundation in Newport Beach California. In 2010 the Lynx traveled from California, through the Panama Canal to participate in the ASTA Great Lakes Challenge. The square topsail schooner Lynx was designed and built to interpret the general configuration and operation of a privateer schooner or naval schooner from the War of 1812. The original Lynx was a "letter of marquee" Baltimore Clipper commissioned during the opening days of the war. Serving effectively as a blockade runner and offensive weapon of war, she was among the first ships to defend American freedom.
Dedicated to all those who cherish the blessings of America, Lynx sails as a living history museum, providing inspiration and resolve at this time in our nation's history. Lynx is an interpretation of an actual privateer named Lynx built by Thomas Kemp in 1812 in Fell's Point, Maryland. She was among the first ships to defend American freedom by evading the British naval fleet then blockading American ports and serving in the important privateering efforts. In 2005, the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse, deemed excess by the Coast Guard, was offered at no cost to eligible entities, including federal, state, and local agencies, non-profit corporations, and educational organizations under the provisions of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. Though it took a few years, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar initiated the transfer of the lighthouse to the City of Chicago on February 24, 2009. The city had designated the lighthouse a Chicago Landmark in 2003.
