Grosse Point Lighthouse
SKU: 5635
The Grosse Point Lighthouse was built in 1873, after 28 shipwrecks near its location on The Great Lakes. The most renown shipwrecks was the 'Lady Elgin' in 1860, which was a vessel headed from Milwaukee to Chicago that killed over 300 people. It was designed by Orlando Metcalfe Poe, who designed some of the most beautiful lighthouses in America on The Great Lakes. Some of Poe's lighthouses are reminiscent of elaborately decorated "chess pieces" with all the frills! He also designed the Wind Point Light in Racine, Wisconsin, about an hour away in addition to other Great Lake Lighthouses. Grosse Point is the last lighthouse on the Great Lakes to have an active 2nd order Fresnel lens.
