Alpena Harbor Light
SKU: 5444
A heavy lumber area, the town at the head of Thunder Bay eventually became known as Alpena. First laid out in 1840 and named ¿Animickee¿ (Chippewa for Thunder), it was named in honor of the Chippewa chief that Henry Schoolcraft signed a treaty with in 1826 to obtain the land, forest and minerals. The original station was built of wood in 1877, rebuilt of wood in 1888 and finally constructed of steel in 1914. Now a fully automated active aid to navigation, it originally housed a Fourth Order Fresnel lens now used at Grand Traverse lighthouse.
