Winter at the Bridge

Winter at the Bridge

SKU: 5541

Built in 1876, the Cedarburg covered bridge is the only Wisconsin covered bridge still standing. It is located just north of Cedarburg on Cedar Creek in Covered Bridge Park. Originally called "Red Bridge", the Ozaukee County Board voted to forever preserve the structure as an historic monument. In 1955 the Port Washington Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution added a plaque that reads "1876-1955 Last Covered Bridge in Wisconsin". The Ozaukee County Historical Society dedicated a State Historical Society official marker on May 23, 1965. It reads:

"Last Covered Bridge built 1876, Retired 1962 - This bridge was built by the Town of Cedarburg on petition of neighboring farmers to replace periodically washed out bridges. Pine logs, cut and milled at Baraboo were fitted and set in place in lattice truss construction with 3x10 inch planks secured by 2 inch hardwood pins, eliminating the use of nails or bolts and floored by 3 inch planking. The Ozaukee County Board in 1940 voted to assume the preservation and maintenance of this bridge.
