Eagle River Lighthouse
SKU: 5608
Rich veins of copper were found in Upper Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula in the 1800s. The "Cliff Lode" was discovered in 1845 and instantly Eagle River became a booming port, rivalling Copper Harbor. Tremendous maritime shipping traffic led to approval for a lighthouse in 1850. The Eagle River lighthouse was completed in 1857. Located on a bluff, the light from the 24' high tower was visible for 10 nautical miles. When the copper mining boom collapsed in 1873, the Cliff Mine closed and the harbor fell into disrepair. The light station continued to serve as the only marker of the shore between the Keweenaw Waterway and Eagle Harbor. The Eagle River lighthouse was decommissioned in 1908 and the buildings were sold at auction. It is now privately owned.
