Keweenaw Waterway Lower Entrance Light
SKU: 5606
During the growth of copper mining in the Keweenaw Peninsula between 1843 and 1968, shipping access to Houghton and Hancock was essential. The Portage River Canal was cut through thick swamp in 1860 to create an 80 ft. wide and 10 ft deep channel that could accommodate large shipping vessels traveling throughout Lake Superior. The current Keweenaw Waterway Upper Entrance lighthouse was built in 1920 to replace the range lights on the east pier of the Portage River near Jacobsville Michigan. Automated in 1973 the 31 ft. tower has a focal plane of 68 ft. and remains today an active aid to navigation.
