Marquette Harbor Lighthouse
SKU: 5601
Marquette Michigan was destined to become a major shipping harbor for Lake Superior due to the area's mining activities and the completion of the new Sault Ste Marie locks in the mid 1800s. The natural harbor at the foot of Marquette Bay revealed a rocky peninsula on the western shore would be the perfect location for a lighthouse to guide vessels entering the harbor. Completed in October 1852, it was first activated in June, 1853. The structure rapidly deteriorated within ten years and in 1865 Congress approved the construction of a replacement on the bay's area of highest elevation on Lighthouse Point. Completed in 1866, its focal plane of 70 feet above the lake makes the light visible for 16 miles.
