Portage River (Jacobsville) Lighthouse
SKU: 5495
The Portage River (Jacobsville) Lighthouse was built in 1870 to assist maritime traffic on Keweenaw Bay. 80 feet from Lake Superior's edge, the light tower is 50 ft high. The new Keweenaw Waterway light was put into service on August 1st, 1920 one mile to the west and the Portage River Lighthouse was deactivated. The property was transferred to the State of Michigan for park land. The park never developed and the land was converted back to the Coast Guard. It was sold at public auction in November 1958. Ownership changed hands over the years and it is now the Jacobsville Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast Inn, offering splendid accommodations with a 360 degree view of the Lake Superior and the Keweenaw Peninsula.
