Seul Choix Point Lighthouse
SKU: 5452
Seul Choix (pronounced Sis-shwa) Point Lighthouse is located on the south shore of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Named by the French meaning "only choice", it indicates this location was the only choice of safe harbor before entering the Straits of Mackinaw. A 100 yard limestone shoal, shallow reef area and the land mass sloping three miles into Lake Michigan made navigation treacherous for the 1800s lumber shipping vessels. The light was placed into service in 1892, but the tower had to be rebuilt and the station was not entirely completed until September, 1895. The tower is 78 feet, 9 inches tall, producing a lens focal plane 80 feet above Lake Michigan's water level. 86 cast iron spiral stairs wind their way vertically within the inner cylinder, passing through 2 landings and leading to a hinged scuttle in the iron watch room floor. Four arched windows with carved limestone lintels are located on the compass points in the watch room, and provided an excellent view of the lake. Automated in 1972, it continues as an active navigational aid but the grounds have been leased to the Gulliver Historical Society who have restored and preserved the station and its history. Their maritime museum is visited by thousands of tourists annually.
