White River Lighthouse
SKU: 5441
The White River Lighthouse was built of local limestone in 1875 on a channel connecting Michigan's White Lake to Lake Michigan. It served as an essential coastal guide for lumber schooners transporting lumber from the White Lake sawmills to the fast growing Chicago and Milwaukee urban areas. It was automated in 1945 and deactivated in 1960. Fruitland Township purchased the lighthouse in 1966, and converted the building into the Great Lake Marine Museum in 1970. Operated now as a museum managed by the Friends of the White River Light Station, it serves as a reminder of the rich nautical history of Michigan and the Great Lakes.
