Kenosha U.S. Coast Guard Station

The first life-saving station in Kenosha was built in 1879. A new station was built in 1934 to replace the outdated original buildings. Coast Guard records report this station responded to 2,307 calls for assistance and approximately 780 were rescued from drowning from 1879 to 1935. One of the worst maritime disasters on Lake Michigan, the sinking of the steamer Wisconsin, occurred 10 miles southeast of the Kenosha harbor on October 29, 1929. 28 persons were rescued by members of this crew and 32 persons were rescued by other craft. All were given first aid at this station.
