First lit in 1948, the Charlevoix South Pier Light continues to guide Lake Michigan boaters through the busy Pine River Channel to the safety of Lake Charlevoix protected harbor. The Pine River Channel has a unique two-way current. After severe westerly windstorms, waters pushed high into Lake Charlevoix will swiftly flow back out to meet other inbound currents. Whirlpools and whitecaps are commonly found at the mouth's harbor.
