Big Sable Point Lighthouse
SKU: 5402
Early French explorers and traders called this stretch of Lake Michigan "Grande Pointe au Sable". During the lumber boom of the mid 1800s, many shipwrecks occurred on what was considered a treacherous stretch of the lake. Completed in 1867 Big Sable's tower measured 112 feet high. Fully automated in 1966 it is today part of the Lighthouse Volunteer Keeper Program - offering a two week stay to those willing to maintain the facilities as well as give tours and manage the gift shop.
