Big Sable Point Lighthouse
SKU: 5401
Completed in 1867 Big Sable's tower measured 112 feet high. This Lake Michigan area was known as Grande Pointe au Sable by French explorers and traders. Big Sable Point was, and still is, an important landmark for mariners traveling a treacherous stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline between Big Sable Point and Ludington. Twelve ships wrecked in the area in 1855 alone. Commerce linked to the growing lumber industry required Big Sable Point be suitably lighted. After the lumbering rush faded, Coal boats and tourists continued to rely on the landmark for navigation. Fully automated in 1966 it is today part of the Lighthouse Volunteer Keeper Program - offering a two week stay to those willing to maintain the facilities as well as give tours and manage the gift shop.
