Racine 1910 North Breakwater Light
SKU: 5275
The demolition of the 1838 Root River Lighthouse in 1876 was the beginning of a series of lighthouse construction projects in the Racine harbor. Rapid growth in maritime commerce in and out of the harbor in the 1800s and early 1900s resulted in numerous harbor reconstruction projects. Lighting needs changed and structures were built, then torn down and replaced. Built in 1910, the iron and steel North breakwater light was scheduled for demolition in 1987. A public outcry saved the light and it became part of the new Reefpoint Marina complex. "Big Red" remains a prominent fixture at the Racine harbor. Visible in the background is the Wind Point Lighthouse.
