1852 Bailey's Harbor "Birdcage" Beacon
SKU: 25266
Captain Justice Bailey came across a violent Lake Michigan storm in 1848 while shipping stone and lumber to Detroit from upper Wisconsin. He sought refuge in a little Door County inlet, now known as Bailey's Harbor. Finding abundant limestone and lumber native to the area, Bailey took samples to Milwaukee industrialist Alanson Sweet. Sweet convinced the U.S. government for the need of a lighthouse in the area and it was completed in 1852. Built of stone from Sweet's quary, the 52' tower was capped with a birdcage style lantern room. The light was replaced in 1870 by the nearby Range Light System. It is one of the nation's three "birdcage" dome lighthouses - the others in Michigan and New York.
