Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Lighthouse Beacon
SKU: 5260
The current Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Light Tower began operation in 1899 and replaced one initially built in 1873. The initial tower had severe vibration problems. Eight 16 ft high butresses provided minimal bracing. The swaying continued even after four wire guy lines were attached. In 1903 the Lighthouse Board corrected a vibration problem by erecting the present skeletal steel framework. Built on the north side of the Ahnapee River entrance to Lake Michigan, it has a focal plane of 107 feet above lake level. On July 7, 1939 lighthouse service was transferred to the Coast Guard.
